Harmonious lighting design for sacred architecture

In the heart of the Belgian city of Mechelen stands St. Catherine’s Church – a historic building whose architecture and atmosphere are significantly influenced by light. The aim of the new lighting concept was to emphasise the sacred character of the church while ensuring clear, functional illumination for church services and visitors. Different room zones, heights and materials placed high demands on precision and light quality. To meet these requirements, lighting solutions from Hoffmeister were chosen.

Lighting concept and implementation

Various luminaire series from Hoffmeister were used for St. Katharina Church, creating a coordinated overall effect. The spotlights from the gin.o 1 and gin.o 2 series as well as lo.nely 3 accentuate ornaments, sculptures and architectural details while also illuminating the vaulted ceiling of the nave. In the side aisles, complx.150 downlights provide uniform, glare-free general lighting. In addition, custom-made pendant luminaires were used to bathe the central nave in harmonious, vertically balanced light. The result is a lighting atmosphere that both emphasises the spiritual atmosphere of the space and showcases its architectural beauty.
