Museum Lighting

Museum lighting – versatile, effective, safe

Museums are regarded as highlights of modern architecture. In addition to the exhibits on display, they are often themselves an expression of high artistic standards. With different, often changing exhibits, they offer a wealth of different impressions. Museum lighting that skilfully sets the scene for everything is therefore as demanding as it is versatile. It must always be able to be adapted to new exhibits and changed exhibitions. A comprehensive lighting concept and perfect technology are needed to meet all requirements.

Museum lighting – from framing to security lighting

The complexity of museum lighting results from numerous requirements that need to be met. These arise from the design concept and the possibilities of building use. The catalogue of lighting requirements for museums is supplemented by legal stipulations for places of assembly or comparable special buildings.

The complexity of museum lighting results from numerous requirements that need to be met. These arise from the design concept and the possibilities of building use. The catalogue of lighting requirements for museums is supplemented by legal stipulations for places of assembly or comparable special buildings.

Skillfully staging exhibits with light

The central elements of any museum are the exhibits on display. These can be pictures, sculptures or other art objects. Depending on the intention of the museum and the type of exhibits, the lighting requirements can vary greatly. Spectacular staging can be just as much the aim of the lighting as detailed presentation with an informative character. In addition, there are variable illuminations that can be part of the object or its presentation.

Lead, guide, move – directing visitors with light

Large, versatile rooms are characteristic of museum buildings. Light often takes the place of walls, columns and other structural elements to direct streams of visitors and guide them from room to room or from exhibit to exhibit. Changes between light and dark appeal to human instincts and allow visitors to be guided almost naturally.

Just in case – safety lighting

The regulations governing places of assembly in the individual federal states as well as various DIN standards and the specifications of property insurers mean that buildings need to meet extensive requirements in the event of damage. The most important task of lighting is to guide people safely out of the danger zone into the open in an emergency. The emergency lighting required for this purpose needs to be neither gimmicky nor aesthetically pleasing, but must be unmistakable even under stress.

Diverse requirements perfectly implemented – integrative lighting concepts

Because of the wealth of different requirements, the key to successful museum lighting is a comprehensive lighting concept. Integrative concepts dispense with several parallel, unconnected concepts for the individual task areas. Instead, they link all requirements, so that dual uses and supplements enable optimum success with the least possible technical effort. For the theoretically elaborated concepts to be convincing in practice, the right lighting technology is essential. This is where Hoffmeister’s entire expertise comes into play, both as a manufacturer of luminaires and lighting technology in general and as a partner and consultant to architects, designers and lighting planners.

Lighting technology from Hoffmeister – always the perfect luminaire

A wide product portfolio of museum lighting with LED technology provides the toolbox from which lighting designers select the optimal luminaires for individual requirements. Light colour and control, but also the appropriate technical equipment and fuse protection are important selection criteria. Basically, our luminaires are protected to IP20 and thus suitable for museum interiors. For outdoor areas and special cases with higher demands on moisture or driving rain resistance, products up to protection level IP68 offer the right solutions.

The track – simple, flexible and versatile

Our control.x 3-circuit track offers modern and flexible solutions for museum lighting. Luminaires can be individually selected for each exhibit, with light output, light modulation and luminaire accessories matched to the requirements of the exhibit in question. In addition, each spot or spotlight can be dimmed as required. Changing exhibitions in particular benefit from the low amount of work involved in adding or changing luminaires on our tracks. The little brother of the control.x track is the control.x Micro, which redefines flexibility. The miniaturized conductor rail system impresses with its slim design and high adaptability for the ak.tina 1 and ak.tina 2.

Spotlights – illuminate, stage, focus

Spotlights offer optimum conditions for illuminating exhibits in a targeted manner. Depending on requirements, the light cone can be controlled via flap shutters, filters or lenses so that bright and dark zones are designed according to the lighting plan. Objects behind glass that need to be protected can be illuminated without glare using the miniature spotlights of the ak.tina series.

Downlights, floodlights, wallwashers – the room as part of the exhibition

Our downlights and floodlights, for example from the DL50-DL100 and ak.tina series 1, can be used to illuminate entire rooms or room areas. LED modular luminaires in various widths are convincing wallwashers. Walls or entire building sections thus become part of the lighting design and provide visual highlights as well as indirect light for outdoor and indoor spaces.

Integrating safety lighting sensibly

Emergency lighting is particularly efficient if it can be integrated into the museum’s existing functional lighting. Although emergency lighting has its own technical requirements, such as a safety power supply, the decision in favour of Hoffmeister luminaires allows different task areas to be combined in terms of design and technology. In this way, emergency lighting does not stand out undesirably.

Light modulation – through differences to enhanced effect

One and the same luminaire can create different lighting moods. Hoffmeister offers a particularly high degree of flexibility with little effort – a great advantage when exhibitions change. This is made possible by the technical features of the luminaires. Dimmability from one to 100 percent light output enables infinitely variable regulation of the luminosity.

Direct, indirect or diffuse – directing light deliberately

Classic lighting is direct. A spotlight casts light directly onto the exhibit. Depending on requirements, a light range from 5 degrees to 45 degrees allows the circle of light to be varied from narrow spot to flood and the desired illumination or shadow effect to be achieved. Lens wallwasher offer the possibility of illuminating backgrounds without glare or reflected light, thus showing the exhibit in negative contrast. Diffuse light sources allow neither the light source nor the light direction to stand out, thus providing an environment that is most comparable to natural light in a cloudy sky. Hoffmeister enables the full range of possible light modulation in the museum and offers solutions for the appropriate presentation of each exhibit. We are also happy to develop special concepts for the lighting of showcases, gallery lighting or the lighting of exhibition spaces.

Framing – the special effect especially for pictures

The effect of a picture is particularly high when it stands out brightly and radiantly against a dark background. The technique behind this is called framing. An infinitely focusable lens allows our spotlights to illuminate the picture precisely, with a sharply defined edge of the illuminated field along the edge of the picture. The effect stands and falls with the perfect light cone. Hoffmeister spotlights with framing technology offer the optimum conditions for the desired results.

Tunable White – adjusting light colour as required

Changing exhibitions require changeable light. This applies not only to mechanical or optical light control, but sometimes also to light colour. Tunable White allows the light colour to be adjusted in the range 2700 to 6500 Kelvin, thus covering the entire spectrum of white light. This means that exhibits can always be put in the right light, in the truest sense of the word. In addition, the adjustable light colour offers the possibility to design the room atmosphere according to the theme in such a way that the museum contents are promoted in a targeted manner.
