Rotterdam’s landmark – the Ersamus Bridge – in a new light

The 802-meter-long structure spans the New Meuse with a 410-meter-long, asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge that has a 278-meter-wide main opening and a 139-meter-high, white, angled pylon. The bridge was designed in 1989 by the architects Van Berkel & Bos (UNStudio) and quickly became the city’s landmark.
As part of extensive renovation measures, SILL has given the bridge a new look. As before, the pylon and the supporting cables are illuminated so that the Erasmus Bridge is visible even from a great distance. With this new lighting, the city saves a full 70% on energy costs for bridge lighting.

Projector 14L

The previous lights with conventional lighting technology were replaced by the energy-efficient LED lights from the 14L series. The lights in the lanes and the decorative lighting on the underside of the bridge structure were also replaced.
For the illumination, a total of 86 type 14L luminaires in 4500 K and RGBW were installed on the previously used light points – all equipped with a DALI control. With IP65 and active temperature management (safe to operate up to ta55°), the 14L makes the interaction of light and bridge architecture outdoors tangible.

Plane projector 155
The bridge’s street lighting was equipped with the 155 series lights and the additional “CityTouch” radio control. CityTouch is a software platform for outdoor lighting. It includes web applications for managing street lights and analyzing lighting data. This new technology turns ordinary city lighting into a real smart city.
