Exhibition space

Lighting in the exhibition space – exhibit-related lighting brilliant and flexible

Within museums or galleries, the actual exhibition room occupies a very special position. Here, the focus is clearly on the art object, i.e. the painting or sculpture. The effect of the object and the interaction with the room itself are decisive for the sensations triggered in the viewer. Light is the central instrument for controlling impressions and perceptions. That is why lighting plays an important role in the exhibition space.

The exhibition space – skilfully creating spatial effects

Of course, exhibition spaces also have entrances and exits. Beyond that, however, everything revolves around the art and its viewers. In order for art objects to have an undisturbed effect, exhibition rooms are usually greatly reduced both architecturally and in terms of the interior. Pedestals or platforms for object art as well as partitions to increase the usable wall space are often the only “furniture” in these rooms. Turning these puristic, sometimes empty rooms into something special for the art on display is the task of the lighting. It is only through an appropriate lighting concept that the exhibition space becomes the environment in which the painting or sculpture unfolds its intended effect on visitors and conveys a message.

Lighting for art – requirements and tasks

The range of different lighting requirements for paintings and other art is wide:

— Creating an atmosphere appropriate to the objects on display
— Zoning of the exhibition space into exhibition and movement areas
— Basic lighting for movement areas
— Staging and accentuation of individual art objects or entire series of paintings and sculptures
— Indirect backlighting of exhibition areas via wall or ceiling lighting
— Depending on the building: safety lighting in case of fire or evacuation

A particularly well-designed lighting system is capable of meeting as many requirements as possible with one and the same luminaire. And ideally without the need for costly retrofitting or other adaptations requiring tools. That’s why our lighting technology is not only powerful, but also versatile and flexible. This is how we contribute our share to the success of art exhibitions.

Hoffmeister – lighting technology with added value

Our portfolio of different luminaires covers a wide range of lighting technologies. This means that we offer the right product for every need. Both with regard to the type of luminaire, for example as a spotlight, recessed or pendant luminaire, and with regard to the possible supplements for light adaptation, we offer a wide selection for every application. For lighting in the showroom, two lighting solutions stand out in particular:

Setting the scene with framing

A picture has an optimum effect when it stands out clearly from its background. Ideally, the background should not appear at all in the viewer’s perception. This is achieved by so-called “framing” through the use of contour spotlights. Our spotlights of the gi.no series can be perfectly aligned to the respective exhibit by means of focusable lenses and sliders. In this way, we create sharply defined cones of light that illuminate the exhibits precisely. The background remains in the dark, a perfect staging.

Tunable White for variable light colours

Another option for individual illumination of pictures and art in general is called “Tunable White”. All spotlights equipped with this feature, for example the models of our gi.no 3 series, offer the possibility of continuously adjusting the light colour in the range from 2700 to 6500 Kelvin. This allows each spotlight to create exactly the lighting mood that the respective artist considers ideal for the work of art. This adaptability allows for a comprehensive variability of light – without the need for time-consuming changes or conversions of individual luminaires or entire lighting installations.

Dimming, directing and modulating – flexible lighting in the exhibition space

These highly exhibition-specific lighting control options are complemented by other more general options. These include the infinitely variable dimmability of our LED luminaires from one to 100 percent of the luminous flux. A wide variety of filters and shutters also allow the light to be limited, steered and modulated as required. Accessories can be exchanged or added without tools in a few simple steps.

The track – changing exhibitions, changing lighting

The Hoffmeister-control.x track is particularly well suited to the installation of lighting for the exhibition of art of any kind. Simple and versatile at the same time, it provides the perfect basis for powerful and flexible lighting concepts for illuminating art.

Control.x – functional standard for every exhibition space

The control.x track system expands the possibilities for modern lighting management. It is installed as a surface-mounted track or a track with ceiling support. The tracks are available in black, white or silver to match the adapter colours.

The control.x track system is a 3-circuit track with two additional control cables. The conductors are arranged in the profile of the tracks so that they are safe to touch. This means that the control lines can not only be used for different control signals, but can also be easily integrated in applications such as emergency lighting in listed buildings.

Install once, equip as required

The strength of our control.x track lies in its particularly simple installation and tool-free fitting with almost all luminaires from our portfolio. From one connection point, standard track lengths of up to 5 metres can be realised – with couplings, theoretically even infinite system lengths. Power can be supplied to almost any connector in the wide range of connection elements. The connectors are equipped with specially developed plug-in terminals which, with their 2.5 mm cross-section, enable fast and tool-free connection. These details set us apart from our competitors and offer you advantages in the form of simple, fast and at the same time safe installation. Once mounted, any spotlights, floodlights or pendant luminaires can be attached, moved or removed again using suitable adapters. The load-bearing capacity of up to 10 kilograms means that there are virtually no limits.

3-circuit use, DALI or emergency lighting operation – versatility as a guarantee for a successful lighting concept

A simple and at the same time versatile design of the control.x track enables several types of use. Either as a genuine 3-circuit track, for controlling luminaires e.g. via DALI or also in mixed operation – i.e. simultaneous use of spotlights with 3-circuit adapters and Hoffmeister spotlights with DALI adapters.

Economical for sustainable enjoyment of art

High-quality art enjoyment and economical lighting are not mutually exclusive. We use particularly energy-saving LED technology, enabling economical operation even with intensive lighting requirements. This reduces costs and protects the environment. In this way, Hoffmeister also contributes to more sustainability in this segment of lighting technology without any loss of quality.
