Car park lighting – effective area lighting in wind and weather

Whether in public spaces, at businesses or in residential areas – parking spaces are needed everywhere. And most of the time, the grey areas are unsightly and sometimes even unwillingly used. For better usability and a more pleasant appearance of parking spaces, appropriate lighting is an effective means, because brightness is inviting and conveys safety. The challenge of car park lighting

Although a car park is ultimately “just” an open space where motor vehicles are parked, it places a whole range of different demands on the lighting concept:

— Safety for pedestrians to and from vehicles, especially if no separate footpaths are marked
— Creating a sense of security by reducing dark corners and “dead” areas

These different requirements bring very different aspects of lighting to the fore, which is why the requirements profile for luminaires for car parks is comparatively complex. In addition to the technical requirements for car park lighting, numerous regulations must be observed, for example from labour law or the DIN standards for accessibility. For example, DIN EN 12 464 – Part 2 defines illuminance levels for car parks according to frequency.

Functionalism – driving and parking safely

Every motor vehicle has its own headlights. However, especially in tight bends and when manoeuvring, these do not reliably illuminate the entire area of movement. People who step onto the road from the side, for example, are hardly detected by them and are thus quickly overlooked. This is why car park lighting has the task of illuminating as much of the area as possible and thus making the movement of vehicles and pedestrians on the parking area safer.

See and be seen – in the service of safety

Women’s parking spaces are designed to enable women to walk short distances to and from their own vehicles. The background is the fact that parking spaces are confusing and only a few people are there at the same time. Especially at night, there is an increased risk of being frightened and, in the worst case, harassed. Ideally, therefore, car park lighting creates a basic brightness that generates precisely this sense of safety for each individual parking space, which is often subsequently intended to be brought about by specially designated women’s parking spaces.

Resistance to weathering and vandalism

Car parks are open areas unprotected from wind and weather. Intensive sunlight, strong winds and precipitation of all kinds are natural stresses for luminaires in car parks. In addition, there is often the issue of vandalism. Less frequented areas, which definitely include car parks, are time and again the scene of wanton damage and blind destructiveness. Luminaires are usually the number one target for the perpetrators and must therefore be highly resistant.

Floodlight projectors – low installation effort, high light output

Thanks to excellent asymmetric lighting techniques, the 150-155 series plane projectors in particular are ideally suited for illuminating large areas such as car parks. Highly efficient LED modules direct the luminous flux specifically onto the parking area via precise lenses. This allows large areas to be illuminated with a small number of required light points. Thanks to good glare control, a high level of visual comfort is also achieved. Increased corrosion protection for use in critical areas is available on request.

Post-top luminaires – create lighting points yourself

As parking spaces are not always directly adjacent to buildings or structures with possibilities for mounting floodlights, we offer optional accessories for our plane projectors for mounting several floodlights at one mast location. This gives our luminaires their ideal height for optimum light distribution without having to rely on external framework conditions. Due to the slim design as a point mast, pole-mounted luminaires can be positioned well even in confined spaces without hindering the efficient occupancy of the parking space.

High protection for strong load capacity

Precisely because outdoor positioning is associated with enormous stresses due to moisture, dirt and temperature changes, we rely on appropriate protection in accordance with current technical standards. All Hoffmeister luminaires designed for outdoor use therefore have at least IP65 protection and in individual cases also have a high resistance to mechanical stress. In this way, you will find the right luminaire for every location with the best prerequisites for trouble-free operation and a long life expectancy.
