Facade lighting – stylish visibility for buildings

Night-time shots of buildings are popular image motifs. Why? Because effective lighting literally puts the building in the right light. Besides architectural monuments, this means of visibility in the dark is used for a whole range of other buildings, from public administration buildings to company headquarters. From our point of view as a manufacturer of high-quality luminaires, the illumination of facades is a challenge. This is because enormously large areas to be illuminated often meet an environment that demands a great deal of the technology.

Good reasons for illuminating building facades

Every building has its own history, which in most cases was the reason for installing facade lighting. But there are also quite pragmatic facts and objectives that speak in favour of such an installation:

— Public significance of the building
— Relevance of buildings or entire streets in terms of monument law
— Advertising or marking of private company buildings, etc.
— Temporary lighting campaigns for festive occasions, artistic aspects, etc.

Facade lighting equals outdoor lighting – high requirements for outdoor lighting

The requirements for façade lighting are high. This is true in several respects because a building facade is logically illuminated from the outside. As such, it exerts a non-negligible influence on its surroundings and often even requires a permit under public law from the authority responsible for emission control. Such a permit is tied to certain criteria that must be met when implementing this outdoor lighting. The decisive factor is the technology used, i.e. the luminaires.

Glare and “light pollution“

The key point of requiring approval for many facade lighting systems is to limit emissions, which undoubtedly include light. This is because light has the property of influencing the human organism and human well-being. Suitable facade projectors must therefore be able to direct their light onto the building in such a way that the facade is illuminated without unintentionally emitting too much light into the surroundings. The aim is to minimise so-called light pollution. This goal is best achieved if the luminaires used are able to be adjusted as required and the light is adapted to the requirements. Of course, appropriate luminous intensity and light control are also mandatory prerequisites in order to nevertheless reach and illuminate the extensive and sometimes distant facades and facade areas.

Technical resistance

To illuminate a building facade, the projectors used must inevitably be positioned outdoors. This means they are exposed to many influences such as wind and weather, heat and frost, water, dirt and even mechanical stresses. This is because the luminaires are exposed to their environment and thus to all kinds of adversities. A high degree of protection and a high level of resistance are therefore mandatory prerequisites for the technology used for facade lighting.

Facade lighting from Hoffmeister – spotlights and floodlights for spot and area lighting

Our projectors are ideal for facade lighting. Floodlights primarily permit wide-area illumination of entire building fronts or even partial areas of the facades. Linear luminaires of the led.modular series convince with a light output of up to 9450 lumens and thus a minimisation of installation points and luminaire locations per facade. Beam angles of up to 45 degrees provide wide, wide-area illumination that can be used for efficient yet effective lighting characteristics depending on brightness requirements and distance from the building. multi.flood series floodlights can also be used for wide-area facade illumination with a beam angle of up to 64 degrees and a light output of between 12000 and 16825 lumens, but in contrast to our linear floodlights, they are used from a clearly punctual light source. The controllable light emission from narrow spot to wide beam also offers the possibility of targeted illumination of individual components such as towers, gate areas or roof edges. Combined with our line spotlights, they also allow accentuation of individual striking facade areas, in addition to basic illumination. This means that our multi.flood series floodlights have both the widest range of applications and the greatest performance of our LED facade lighting.

Light colour – impression and perception from cool to cosy

Although our lighting technology for facade illumination only offers a choice of two light colours, 3000 and 4000 Kelvin, this variance is already sufficient to achieve different perceptions. Historic buildings in particular often need to be presented in a cosy rather than cool and forbidding way. A warm light colour optimally implements this requirement. Modern architecture in particular, on the other hand, works better with more restrained or neutral light colours to emphasise the design language without adding too dominant an expression of its own.

High protection standards for luminaires outdoors – moisture, dirt and mechanical stress resistance

For all luminaires used outdoors, the minimum protection standard is IP65 and thus against direct sprinkling. In addition, the linear luminaires of the multi.flood series have a class IK7 impact rating, which corresponds to a force impact of up to 2 joules. Although this does not reliably prevent deliberate and wilful destruction, the luminaires are protected against normal outdoor mechanical stresses at all times.
